Stories from the 'Loin

Stage Coach Community Theatre Program

American Conservatory Theater

2015

Stories from the 'Loin was an ensemble-devised production exploring housing precarity, addiction, and resilience. At the time, American Conservatory Theater was located in the Tenderloin, a neighborhood that has experienced rapid gentrification due to the influx of tech companies. I developed the project as a collaboration between the theatre, the M.F.A. acting program, and a community-based organization serving unhoused people in the Tenderloin. Using a variety of devising methods, including aesthetics of the oppressed, we created a performance that addressed the housing crisis in San Francisco from the dual perspectives of unhoused residents and graduate students. Students and community members performed alongside each other as we toured the production around the city.
